KPMG's landmark publication on the maturity of IT organizations was the first to take the perspective of creating value as a dimension for measuring the organization's maturity - without explicitly saying so. It still worked with the ITIL practices instead of with the principles of a management system, but it nevertheless nailed it. The model was published in several books produced by Jan van Bon in his role of chief editor.

The USM Value Maturity Model largely follows this model, with some minor improvements.
