DevOps is a practice for developing and managing new software. The main feature of DevOps is the integrated team environment engaged in short-cycle software innovation.

DevOps activities take place in "horizontal" teams, in which representatives from the customer environment and the IT organization work together to continuously renew software. Communication between the user organization and the IT organization is intensive, and the pace of renewal is characterized by small steps, flexibility, and rapid realization (a typical agile way of working). The development activities make intensive use of tools for automating standard operations. The DevOps way of working enables the IT organization to use continuous development, continuous integration, continuous delivery, continuous monitoring and continuous feedback to adapt the software quickly and adequately to the needs of the business.

The DevOps practice is rapidly being adopted in environments where the key benefits of DevOps are key:

Those environments are characterized by systems-of-engagement type software. This means that DevOps has a limited application: systems-of-record type software is mostly managed with other ways of working (bimodal IT). So, for integrated information delivery, more is needed besides DevOps to achieve integrated service delivery.

Organizations applying DevOps therefore benefit from using an integral management system: in this they are no different from other organizations. This applies to both the individual teams involved in DevOps practices and to the organization as a whole.
